Round Table with Flower Inlay, 2019

Walnut table with bent aprons and sunken top inlayed with laser-cut wenge wood flowers.

Bent laminations of solid walnut conceal the layers of wiggle wood and veneer that make the curved sides of this table. For strength, the legs notch into the table top and are attached to the sides with biscuits. The flowers are walnut and wenge veneers, laser cut to snap together like an elaborate puzzle, then pressed in a vacuum bag. Even so, the primary engineering challenge is actually invisible: a channel supporting the table top was integrated into the curved sides while they were bent over a form rather than being cut after construction.
